The myth that so many clients think during rehab is that their movements as they are regaining movement, strength and flexibility is that everything should be perfect and if it isn't then it's not good enough. They also think that because the movement isn't like their other arm or leg, that means that their rehab isn't working because they can't see the change.

Let me share what's going on underneath with this type of thinking that I've seen countless times during rehab with clients. They are only focussed on the end goal which is big and in so doing they struggle to witness the small incremental changes and goals that are achieving on route to achieving their big goal. They believe that by acknowledging the success of the small goals they achieved, means that they are happy with their progress. This thinking of focus sets them up to continually thinking... "What's the point? I'm going to stop because it's not working."

I'm reading a book called Three Feet From Gold

This book talks about how 95% of people give up three feet from the finish line with the mindset of its not working yet, nothing I've done has got me what I want.

The 5% of people who succeed, continue to keep moving forward with the mindset of everything that I am doing is paying off and helping me achieve my goal. They are continually ticking off the small goals they have achieved.

You are probably wondering why is this important.

You see the mindset habit of tracking the small steps and activities your body has achieved, helps you monitor just how much you have progressed and how far you have come on your rehab journey. It helps you honour and celebrate each and every milestone you reach on route to your big goal. In acknowledging what you have achieved, it helps you on the days when you may feel frustrated or when you feel like you are struggling with a particular movement pattern.

So, where do you spend most of your time with your thinking? Are you in the camp with the 95% thinking nothing is working and no changes are happening or are you in the camp with the 5% tracking and acknowledging each small milestone reached?

Don't underestimate the importance of your mindset and thinking in your recovery and your rehabilitation journey.
