For the past few weeks, I've been feeling like I have to keep going and keep moving forward by pushing through.
Can you relate to this feeling?
Have you been feeling the same way?
Yesterday my mentor spoke about pushing through and keep going when we hit up against our resistance to move forward in a particular area and that when this happens, it is not the time to stop but to keep at it even though your brain is saying “Stop, take a break. It's not working!”.
I know that for some of you, you might also be tapping into this right now. It has been a tumultuous time of constant change. A time when we've had to step up, show up for ourselves and our loved ones and those around us that we help and support. It is a time of being flexible, dynamic and creative!
Have you been feeling like no matter what you've been trying nothing is working and you aren't seeing any results or changes with all the hard work you are putting into your home rehab right now?
If this is the case, I understand how you must be feeling.
Sometimes, fresh eyes on a situation helps us get new perspective on things and re-assessing what has worked and what hasn't worked maybe the first step to figuring out what your next steps are.
In rehab, the brain and body need the combination of the right stimulation i.e. exercises with the right focus, awareness, frequency, repetition in order to establish or re-establish your brain-body connection for improving your mobility.
If the exercises don't have the right focus and awareness meaning of your brain is not involved, then your results are going to take a lot longer to show up
Take my client, for example, she had minimal engagement with her arm rehab and very little activity in her arm before we started working together. When we started working together, she was asking “I've been working hard, why are my results still not showing up?” Within 3 months of us working together intensively, she was lifting her arm into the air by herself, hugging her daughter, touching her face and head independently. And within 4 to 5 months, she was working against her body weight on her hands and knees or hands and feet. This transformation and change was because her brain was engaged in her exercises and her exercises had the right balance of focus, awareness, repetition, frequency and level of difficulty. And her exercises were continually progressed as soon as she achieved certain movements. Most of this work was carried out virtually over the past 4 months.
There is nothing worse than working hard and not getting the results you desire and hope for.
So, the question is: "has your brain and body been involved in your rehab or just your body?" If the answer is yes, great news. You are on the right track. If the answer is no, then it might be time to change this up.
You see, for lasting change, we want your brain and body connected during all your rehab work and your exercises need to have the right balance of focus, awareness, repetition, frequency and level of difficulty.
